Crewe Co-operative Friendly Society was established in June 1845. In the returns under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1893 (see D 5291/116) its production activities were listed as cabinet making, shoe-making, bread making, confectionery, tailoring, millinery, dressmaking and tinsmithing, while on the distributive side, it was active as grocers and general dealers. By 1910 membership exceeded 10,000. Kelly's Directory, 1923, lists stores in Market Street and Co-operative Street, with branches in 11 other locations, as well as coal wharves. |
